Alstroemerias have long been a staple of cottage gardens, but modern cultivars have an extended flowering season, with larger blooms and more vivid colours. Excellent in summer borders, especially with roses, they can also be used in containers.
These striking lilies are native to South America and therefore flower during the Summer months. These plants make excellent gifts due to their long-lasting flowers and can be potted or used to brigthen up a border.

Due to their South American roots, these plants enjoy direct sunlight, although can also be planted in partial shade. They are also drought tolerant and may only need to be watered occasionaly to encourage new blooms. Add mulch to the base of these plants for the first two Winters to protect their roots from frost.
To keep plants flowering, remove faded blooms regularly. But instead of cutting off individual flowers, once the whole cluster has faded, grasp the stem near the base and gently pull it away from the plant. This encourages new flower stems to grow.
